Study finds mechanism by which obesity promotes pancreatic and breast cancer
Obesity is a condition in which a person has accumulated a high amount of body fat that in turn has a negative effect on their health. There is now scientific evidence of obesity being a cause of cancer. Cancer involves the abnormal growth of cells that have a potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body.
Scientists at Harvard Medical School at Massachusetts General Hospital have uncovered a novel mechanism that links obesity to cancer progression.
The research was published in the journal Clinical Cancer Research and describes an association between obesity and an overabundance of a factor called placental growth factor (PIGF). VEGFR-1 is PIGF’s receptor which is expressed in immune cells within tumors. The binding of PIGF TO VEGFR-1 was found to promote tumor progression.
These findings were established by experiments carried…
